The Cardiology Department screens, investigates and
evaluates heart disease. Here are some of the tests we routinely
carry out for our patients.
ECG (Electrocardiogram)
An ECG is a graphical representation of the electrical activity
of the heart. It is a painless non-invasive procedure. Electrodes
are attached to the skin while you are lying on your back.
The test is carried out either in the cardiology department
or at the bedside. No special preparation is necessary.
Exercise Tolerance Test (Stress Test)
This non-invasive procedure is carried out to assess patients’ exercise
tolerance and to evaluate and indicate coronary artery disease.
The exercise stress test involves continuous ECG recording
of the rate and rhythm of heart and blood pressure while
the patient walks on a treadmill. A doctor is present throughout
the test as well as a nurse and/or a cardiac technician.
No special preparation is necessary.
Echocardiogram
An echocardiogram is a cardiac ultrasound meaning a picture
of the heart is produced by using sound waves passed through
the chest. It is used to examine the structure and function
of the heart. It is a painless and non-invasive procedure.
A transducer, to produce and record the sound waves, is placed
on the chest and produces moving images of the heart on screen.
These images are recorded. The images are then viewed and
reported on by a consultant cardiologist. No special preparation
is necessary. |
