BON SECOURS OBSTETRIC SERVICES TO TRANSFER TO CORK UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL

Tuesday, 15th November, 2005

The Board of the Bon Secours Health System today confirmed that Obstetric Services at the hospital are to transfer to the new Cork University Maternity Hospital (CUMH) with effect from 1st March, 2007.  Bookings at the Maternity Unit will continue and existing maternity services are fully operational at “The Bons” until this date, at which point an overnight transfer of patients will take place.  Gynaecological Services are to be retained at the Bon Secours.

In preparation for the move, the hospital and its Board have ensured that the careers of staff and consultants are protected.  All nursing and nursery nursing staff dedicated to the care of obstetric patients have been given the option to transfer to the new Cork University Maternity Hospital or to remain working at the Bon Secours.

“The decision to discontinue the service was a difficult and regrettable one for the Hospital Board,” said Hospital Manager, Harry Canning.  “It is simply not economically feasible to continue an Obstetric Service at the Bon Secours in light of the new, large capacity publicly-funded maternity facility at Cork University Hospital.

“I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank the sisters, staff and consultants who have worked to make the Bon Secours Maternity Hospital the trusted institution that it has been since its opening in 1958,” added Mr Canning.

“The Board of the Hospital and Hospital Management acknowledge their tireless work and contribution to making the Bon Secours one of Cork’s most loved Maternity Hospitals.   We would also like to sincerely thank all the patients  - past and present - for their loyalty and support of the Bon Secours through the years.”

Management at the Bon Secours is to work closely with management at CUMH in the lead-in to the move to ensure a seamless transfer of services for patients.  In the interim, the Hospital is keen to reassure all mothers currently booked with the Bon Secours that their care will in no way be affected by this decision.  The Hospital is writing to all expectant mothers booked with the Bon Secours and to their GPs to convey this message.  An Information Phoneline Service for anyone with a query in relation to today’s announcement has been set up on 1800-200-623 and information is also available at:  www.bonsecoursireland.org/hospitals/cork/news.asp

As part of the ongoing investment in the Bon Secours, which in 2005 saw the development of additional theatre capacity, the Board of Bon Secours Health System is currently finalising a major development plan for the Hospital which will enhance existing services, in particular cancer and cardiology, and develop new services.
