How are allergy tests conducted?
There are two methods of testing used: laboratory, analysis of blood
samples and 'exposure' testing.
Blood Sample Analysis requires that a sample of blood is taken and subjected
to specialised laboratory testing. Depending on the range of testing
required it might take up to 21 days for results to become available
from the laboratory.
Exposure testing involves the person being exposed by skin contact to
minute quantities of allergens in a carefully controlled procedure. The
range of allergens used will be determined by the Consultant based on
the patients history. It may be necessary to conduct a series of tests.
The procedure takes from 30 to 45 minutes to complete. The test results
will be discussed with you and then conveyed to your General Practitioner.
Are there follow-up examinations?
That depends an the nature of the allergy and the course of treatment
prescribed. The majority of patients will require at least one follow-up
examination.
How do I arrange a test?
You should first visit with your General Practitioner, who will arrange
an appointment and prepare an introductory letter for the Consultant.
