Diabetes Specialist Service

Diabetes Mellitus is a long-term disorder characterised by high blood glucose levels or hyperglycaemia.  Early diagnosis and effective treatment are central to diabetes care.  In order to effectively monitor and manage the condition, people with diabetes require access to appropriate medical treatment and services, essential medications, self-care supplies, and most importantly, education and support.  Poor management will result in poor health outcomes and an increased likelihood of developing complications.

The Diabetes Service is managed by Diabetes Specialist Nurses, with the support services of a Diabetes Dietitian, Physiotherapy, Orthotics, Chiropody and Podiatry.  Consultant Endocrinologists Professor Brendan Buckley and Dr. Eoin O Sullivan are the clinical leads for the service.  The goal of the Diabetes Specialist Service is to provide specialist education so that patients and their families can become independent in the daily management of diabetes and in turn maximize their health.

*A phone service is also available for support and advice which operates from 8am to 5pm Monday to Friday. The Diabetes Clinic is not an emergency service.  If emergency attention is required, contact your local General Practitioner or Accident & Emergency Department.
