Pathology
The Pathology Department provides a quality and efficient service to both inpatients and outpatients.
All laboratory disciplines actively participate in Ire / UK External Quality Assurance Schemes.

Referrals |
Test samples are accepted from General Practitioners and should be delivered to Pathology Reception between 8:30 am and 5:00 pm Monday to Friday.
Please use the
Specimens should not be delivered outside opening hours without prior arrangement. |

Phlebotomy |
Patients referred by General Practitioners can access the phlebotomy service from 8:00 am - 4:00 pm, Monday to Friday. |

Turnaround time |
The results of routine examinations are normally available within 24hours. More specialised investigations may take longer. Results are posted to General Practitioners every afternoon Monday to Friday. It is the policy of the Pathology Department to telephone the requesting clinician with all urgent or abnormal results. Results of Laboratory tests will be made available to patients through their General Practitioners and not directly from the laboratory. d |

Screening Tests Available
Full Blood Count
Haemoglobin, Red Cell Count, Indices, Platelet Count, White Cell Count, 5-part Differential (machine), Manual Differential as required. |
INR
The Haematology Department runs an Anticoagulant Monitoring Service for patients taking oral anticoagulants (mainly Warfarin). Results are given to the patient to return with to their General Practitioner or the result is telephoned directly to the General Practitioner. |

Helicobacter Pylori Stool Antigen
Stool samples should arrive within 72 hours of taking. Results are telephoned on day on receipt. |

MRSA Screen
Nasal and 1 Body Swab from Axilla, Umbilicus or Groin to detect the presence of MRSA.
Pre-hospital admission / post treatment. |
